Lackey: a real charmer

As if you needed one more reason to dislike John Lackey. According to, he has apparently filed for divorce from his wife, Krista. You know, the wife who has recently been battling breast cancer.

National baseball writers like FoxSports’ Ken Rosenthal are urging people to withhold judgment until all the facts are known, but sympathy is not forthcoming from Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman.

An already unlikeable guy has somehow made himself even more despicable. He’s called out teammates, explodes when his manager pulls him from a game, and complains about his lack of privacy. This coming from a guy who has not come close to justifying the five-year, $82.5 million contract he signed before the 2010 season. He’s 26-23 with a 5.38 ERA and has actually pitched well in spots. But his bad is REALLY bad (10 starts allowing five or more earned runs).

No doubt he’s been affected this season by what’s happened in his personal life, but Lackey hasn’t done much to earn sympathy. His teammates haven’t been quick to come to his defense either.

There’s no denying he’s a passionate, driven pitcher who wears his emotions on his sleeve. But he’s out of his element in Boston, where the spotlight burns brightest, especially on a team in the throes of a potentially epic collapse.

It’s also a team that could clearly do without this distraction.
